Miles of Streets Paved
The Department of Public Works aims to surpass a 72 Pavement Condition Index (PCI) for the City's overall street system. PCI is a widely used measure of general pavement conditions, using a scale of 0-100. Our goal is to not have any streets in a serious to failed condition by the end of 2021.
It is important to monitor the quality of public streets because poorly maintained roads can constrain mobility, significantly raise vehicle operating costs, and increase accident rates.
The City awarded this years paving contract in March of 2017, with work starting at the end of April 2017. Significant progress has been made in completing the work under this years contract with work completing in October 2017.
Streets are inspected for their deterioration on a three year cycle and input into a PCI, a national scoring system for pavement. Streets are repaired based on their PCI score which determines appropriate reconstruction options for a street including preventative maintenance techniques.
